She retired from the Richmond State Hospital, and formerly worked for AVCO, Noah's Ark Day Care and Miami University, She was a 1959 graduate of Dixon rael High School. Raymond J. Stevens Raymond Joseph Stevens, 94, Centerville, passed away Dec. 9,2010. He was born July 17, 1916, in Oak Lawn, the son of the late Leo A. and Clotilde Rabig Stevens.
He was an accomplished musician and played tenor saxophone and clarinet for many of the Chicago, "big bands" during the '30s and '40s. He performed with and wrote music arrangements for the following bands: Dick Carlton, Johnny Gilbert, Art Mooney, Ray Pearl and Everett Hoagland. Ray served in Company Battalion 384 in North Africa and Italy during World War II. Following his discharge, he attended Butler University, Indianapolis, where he received his BA degree. He eventually retired as director of advertising for Farm Bureau of Indiana.
During his stint in the U.S. Army during World War II, he played with Andre Kostelanetz when he and his band toured in North Africa. While serving in Casablanca, North Africa, Ray played with a band that performed in "Ric's Americain Bar," the bar that was featured in the movie "Casablanca." Survivorsincludehisnieces and husbands, Diane and John Lebo, Richmond, Lynn and Robert Herklotz, Fairfax, stepgranddaughters, Wanna Kay Freeman, Lebanon, and Linda Newton of Eminence, Ind. WOOD Re ba was born on Oct. 15, 1916, to the late Dorsey E. and Belva N. (Study) Thurston. Reba was a 1934 graduate of Williamsburg High School.
She was a longtime member of the New Madison United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school for more than 50 years. Reba loved children and hundreds of kids learned about Christ's love through her dedication. Reba also volunteered for Wayne Health Care for many years. In addition to her parents, Reba was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, in June 1981; two brothers, Herbert Thurston and Robert Thurston; and two sisters, Delia Benner and Jeanette McElwain. Reba is survived by two sons, David (Roxanna) Wood of Enon, Ohio, and Larry (Linda) Wood of New Madison; a sister, Elsie Schultz of Beulah, a brother, Ernest Thurston of Oneco, a brother-in-law, John Wood of Clayton, six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
